Jasmine is our family cow. She is a registered Jersey and is almost three years old. We purchased her as a four-month-old calf. She freshened (gave birth) for the first time on September 7, 2005. Unfortunately, her calf was still-born. During her lactation she provided us with about 4 gallons of milk per day.
We milk twice per day and now use a small milking machine. We milked by hand for about the first three weeks. The machine is faster and more efficient, not to mention easier on the hands.
With her milk we make cheese, butter, yogurt and other milk products. Of course we just drink some of it too. We also use milk to feed our chickens and on occasion raise calves.
She is pregnant again, due in September. She was bred to a Lowline Angus which is basically a miniature Black Angus. We can't wait to see the baby!
